The Government of Ghana has announced plans to build a world-class artificial intelligence computing center to accelerate innovation, research and digital transformation across the country.
President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement on Friday, April 24, during the launch of Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, describing the project as a major investment in the country’s technological future.
According to the President, the proposed AI computing center will provide the infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence systems, including advanced computing capacity, secure data storage and reliable digital resources.
He said the facility would support researchers, startups, universities and businesses developing AI solutions for Ghana and the wider African market.
Mahama revealed that government will invest $250 million into the project, calling it a necessary step to ensure Ghana remains competitive in the fast-growing global digital economy.
He noted that data, computing power, connectivity and energy have become as important in the digital age as roads, ports and power plants were in earlier eras of development.
“The proposed AI Computing Center will serve as a center for research, innovation and enterprise,” the President said.
The center is expected to help Ghanaian innovators build solutions in agriculture, healthcare, education, finance, logistics and public administration.
Government believes the project will also create jobs, attract foreign investment and strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.
In addition to the computing center, Mahama announced another $20 million to support the short- to medium-term rollout of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
He said Ghana’s long-term goal is to become a leading artificial intelligence hub in West Africa through investment, skills development and responsible technology adoption.
The AI computing center is expected to play a central role in helping Ghana build homegrown technology solutions and expand its influence in Africa’s digital future.
