ECG has announced plans to deploy 300 new transformers in Kumasi as part of a major intervention to improve electricity supply and reduce frequent outages in the city.
According to the Acting Managing Director of ECG, Ing. Julius Kwame Kpekpena, the transformer rollout forms part of a broader programme aimed at stabilising power supply in the Ashanti Region over the coming months.
He explained that 65 transformers will be injected into the network immediately, while the full programme will see between 300 and 400 new distribution transformers installed across Kumasi by the time the project is completed.
The initiative will also include upgrades to outdated units, as well as new installations at major bulk supply points and substations. ECG says the intervention covers both transmission and distribution line improvements, which are expected to significantly boost reliability.
Mr Kpekpena noted that some local power challenges in communities would begin to see improvements within three months, while wider upgrades are scheduled for completion within six months to one year.
Residents of Kumasi are expected to experience noticeable improvements in electricity supply within six months, with ECG targeting a full resolution of major power challenges by the end of the year.
The company said the project will address medium-voltage and low-voltage network issues, including faulty fuses, phase interruptions and weak transformers that have affected homes and businesses in parts of the city.
The latest announcement comes as consumers in Kumasi continue to demand more stable and reliable electricity to support households and economic activity.
