Be humble, let the people praise you – Mahama slams Akufo-Addo for unveiling statue of himself

Former President, John Mahama has criticised President Akufo-Addo for what he describes as self-glorification after the President unveiled a statue of himself in the Western Region.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo should demonstrate humility and allow others to praise him for his achievements, rather than seeking personal recognition.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s comments came after President Akufo-Addo unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi on Wednesday, November 6, during his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.

The Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah said the monument is intended to honour the development initiatives the President has overseen during his time in office.

However, in response to the unveiling, Mr Mahama stressed that leaders should focus on serving the people rather than seeking personal accolades.

“He went to Takoradi recently and unveiled a statue of himself. How is this possible,” Mr Mahama questioned.

“Every president must have humility. People should be the ones praising you and honouring you. You are not supposed to craft your own statue, unveil it, and ask the people to clap for you.”

The former President also criticised President Akufo-Addo for receiving honourary degrees while performing his duty as a president.

“You go to every university across the country and ask them to give
you a doctorate while you are still a sitting president,” suggesting
that he should have waited until his term ended before seeking
recognition.

Mr Mahama said; “He should have even waited until his tenure was over
so that when people look at your work, they could say, ‘You did very
well, and we want to honour you.’”

“But instead, he has squeezed the hands of all universities in the
country and forced them to give him a doctorate,” the NDC flagbearer
asserted.
